LONGLINE CAMEL CARDIGAN | CLOSET STAPLES

I had a family member who’s downsizing her wardrobe ask me what clothes I suggests she should keep in her closet. Any exact number of pants? What about dressy clothes? Tops? This got me thinking about my own closet, and what I would personally keep if I chose to purge my wardrobe. By no means am I one to give advice on what to keep and what to throw out — I have enough trouble with this myself! However, the only answer I could give her was this: keep/invest in your basics.

If all else fails, you can count on basics to get you through work, happy hour, and the weekends. In terms of the amount of basics to keep… yeah, not so sure. But the great thing about neutral pieces is the ability to mix-and-match to create a multitude of different outfits. So rather than focusing on set outfits, think about the versatility of a piece of clothing and how many different uses you can get out of it!

I recently invested in this camel cardigan from Banana Republic (a basic) and paired it over my Spanx mock neck bodysuit (another basic). Both of these items are extremely versatile, and newly added staples into my wardrobe.

Is your closet full of versatile basics, or do you thrive wearing color and pattern? It’s no secret that I love my neutrals, but every now and then I’m a sucker for a hot pink sweater!
