I have a love/hate relationship with home décor. Sometimes I feel like I have a good eye for it, while other times I feel incredibly lost. Because of this constant battle, I try to stick with neutrals to play it safe. To make a space interesting, and less ‘blah’, I aim to add texture and depth with different pieces instead of color. For our media console, I wanted to create something modern, affordable, and sleek, all while staying true to my style.
An easy way to add interest and height to an area is by using oversized picture books, also known as “coffee table” books. Here, I’ve stacked 2 books I’ve gathered over the years. Tip! Look at thrift stores for these kinds of books — they don’t need to be in tiptop shape, and you’ll find them way cheaper this way. To add some color without too much risk, include some greenery. You’ll notice I did that here by incorporating a potted plant, and oversized moss balls.
Because the surface area of the console is large, I needed décor that would take up space without being cluttered. To do that, I invested in an oversized footed bowl to take up room.
For the finishing touch, I added a ceramic garland to drape at the base of the potted plant and over the coffee table books. This is a décor trend you’ve likely seen on social media. Again, I’m playing it safe with the neutral-color garland, while adding depth and interest at the same time.
